Patch the rig once. After that there is no programming, no cue list, no beat-gridding a library of tracks, and nobody stuck behind a desk all night. Vaib listens to what is actually happening in the room and lights it — every night, whoever turns up, whether anyone is watching the laptop or not.

Most rooms run their lights on one of two settings.

Setting one

Nobody touches them

The wash comes up at doors and stays there until the last song. Every act gets the same light. The room never changes shape all night.

Setting two

Sound-to-light, only on the beat, all colours

It reacts to loudness, so it strobes through a ballad and sits flat through the drop. It is busy, and it is never about the song.

A lighting designer solves this — they hear a chorus coming and light it. They cost a day rate, they need programming time, and there are not enough of them. Vaib is that job, done live, by something that is listening.

How it works

Four things, thirty times a second.

Nothing here is a preset being triggered. Every frame, Vaib listens, decides where the music is, and works out what the rig should be doing about it.

    It hears

    A microphone in the room, a lead off the sound desk, or whatever is already playing on the laptop.

    Thirty times a second, Vaib takes the sound apart: how loud it is, how bright it is, where the hits land, and which notes are ringing. Nothing is loaded in advance and nothing is tagged by hand — it is listening to your room, not reading a file someone prepared.

    It understands

    The tempo, the key, and what the music is doing right now.

    Quiet, atmospheric, grooving, building, dropping, peaking, breaking down. Each of those has to hold before Vaib commits to it, so one cymbal crash does not reset the night. At the same time an on-device model listens alongside it and works out what kind of sound this even is — a band, someone talking, room noise, near silence — and tags the genre and mood while it plays.

    It decides

    The part a lighting designer does in their head.

    Which colours belong to this song. How bright the night should be by now. Which lights stay on the performer’s face and which are free to play. And — the thing amateur systems always get wrong — when a look is allowed to change at all. Vaib holds a look and changes it at the end of a phrase, not in the middle of a line.

    That decision becomes real values sent to each light you have — never asking a fixture for a colour it cannot make, folding colour down for the simpler units, applying whatever you have set per zone, and passing the safety rules last. Then out of the door to the rig.

The AI, plainly

The listening is live. The taste was learned.

Reacting to sound is easy, and it is what every cheap box already does. Knowing that this particular eight bars is a build, and that a build should be lit by tightening rather than by flashing, is not something you can write down as a rule. That part had to be learned.

A model listening alongside you

While the show runs, a small AI model runs on the same laptop, on the sound coming in. It works out whether it is hearing music, someone speaking, room noise or near silence, and it tags the genre and the mood as it goes. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is asked of the internet — the model ships inside the app.

How long a look should hold. What a chorus does that a verse does not. When a room should be allowed to change and when it absolutely should not. That came out of analysing a large body of real concert footage across genres — not out of one person’s taste, and not out of a preset pack.

Optional: read the song in advance

Give Vaib a track ahead of the night and it can write a timed score for it — where the sections are, where the energy goes, what the colours should be, which moments matter. Useful for a set you know. Entirely optional: the night runs perfectly well on live listening alone.

Safety limits, what a fixture is physically able to do, and blackout are not model decisions and never will be. They are applied to the output after the director has had its say, so nothing that was learned can talk its way past them.

Before you let it near the rig

Automation you can leave in a room alone.

The fastest way to lose a venue's trust is one black stage in front of a paying crowd. Everything below is a rule the system cannot talk its way around — not a setting, and not a promise.

It never goes dark

If the audio source dies, the bridge drops, or a score fails to load, Vaib falls back — to the mic, to the live brain, to the last safe scene. A failure is a quiet amber state, not a black stage.

Blackout is always one press away

Blackout, master dimmer and the safety policy sit above everything the director wants to do. No look, no automation and no remote can get past them.

Nothing reaches the rig unconfirmed

Output stays blocked until every fixture in the patch has been confirmed, and the room has been commissioned. Dry run keeps the analysis and the on-screen preview alive while the hardware stays untouched.

You can see why it did that

The state it is in, the palette it committed to, how confident the tempo lock is, whether it is following live listening or a score. Vaib is explainable on purpose — trust arrives faster than perfection does.

Limits are enforced, not suggested

Flash rate is budgeted and capped. Accessibility and photosensitivity policy is applied after the director, not before, so nothing can talk its way around it.

Built to be left running

A set is two hours; a festival day is twelve. Vaib is written for that and tested that way — long soak runs that watch frame timing, memory and output for hours at a stretch. If the machine gets busy it quietly sheds detail rather than dropping frames, and it does not need restarting between acts.

It works without the internet

The listening, the musical understanding and the fixture output are all local. The bundled model runs on the machine. Cloud analysis exists, is optional, and is off by default.

Depth on demand

Simple enough for the bartender. Deep enough for the tech.

The same instrument, seen from two distances. A first-time operator ignores ninety percent of it and still gets a good-looking night. Nothing is hidden from the person who wants to go further — depth is one deliberate step away, never in the way.

Do I need to buy new lights?
No. Vaib drives standard DMX fixtures through Art-Net, sACN or an Enttec USB interface. If your rig runs off a console today, it will run off Vaib. The fixture library covers common profiles, and anything unusual can be patched by hand.
What do I have to do before a show?
On the first day, patch the rig and confirm each fixture — the part a tech does once. After that, nothing. There is no per-song preparation, no beat gridding and no cue list to write. You open the laptop and press Vaib.
What happens when it gets something wrong?
You take over, and it keeps helping. Overrides chain on top of the director rather than switching it off — hold a look through a chorus and it releases back to auto at the next phrase. Master and blackout are always reachable, and the safety policy sits above all of it.
Does it need the internet?
No. Listening, musical understanding and DMX output all run locally, and the model that tags what it is hearing is bundled with the app. Optional cloud analysis of a specific song exists for people who want it; it is off by default and the show runs fine without it.
What about talking, DJs between bands, or an empty room?
Vaib classifies what it is hearing — music, speech, ambient or quiet — and changes how it behaves. Speech is its own mode, not just a quieter version of the music one: the person stays lit, the colour chases stop.
What computer does it need?
A normal laptop. Vaib is an app you install on Mac or Windows, and it talks to your DMX hardware from the same machine. No dedicated console, no rack, no server, and nothing to rent by the month from anybody else.
Is it safe for photosensitive audiences?
Flash rate is hard-capped by default — you do not have to find a setting and turn it on. The accessibility and safety policy is applied to the output after the director has had its say, so no look, preset, override or remote can push past the cap. Room presets tighten it further: set a space as an intimate bar and it will never fire a full-white strobe, whatever the music does.
What if it crashes in the middle of a set?
It is built for long sessions and tested as one — soak runs that leave it going for hours while frame timing, memory and output continuity are watched. Under load it sheds detail before it sheds frames. And if something upstream does fail — the audio source, the network, the DMX bridge — it falls back to something simpler rather than stopping. The stage does not go dark because software had a bad moment.
When can I buy it, and what does it cost?
Vaib is in testing at live events and is not on general sale yet. Pricing will be a subscription per room with a one-off setup, and it is not final. Ask for a demo and you will be first to hear — and the venues we test with help shape what ships.
